The net collection rate measures how much of the revenue a practice was entitled to collect it actually collected, after removing contractual adjustments. In simple terms, it compares payments received to the amount that was collectible — not to the full billed charges.
It is a truer picture of billing performance than the gross collection rate, because it excludes the contractual write-offs a practice was never going to collect.
Why it matters for billing
Net collection rate is one of the clearest scorecards for a billing operation. A rate well below the high-90s signals lost revenue from denials, underpayments, or write-offs that should have been worked — and points to where to focus.
