Definition

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit number that identifies a healthcare provider in standard electronic transactions. Individual clinicians hold a Type 1 NPI; organizations such as group practices hold a Type 2 NPI.

The NPI is used consistently across payers to identify who rendered and who billed for a service, and it stays with the provider rather than changing from plan to plan.

Why it matters for billing

Claims carry both a rendering and a billing NPI, and payers match them against enrollment and credentialing records. A missing, wrong, or not-yet-enrolled NPI is a straightforward but common cause of rejections and denials, which is why enrollment and NPI accuracy are checked before billing.
