Patient responsibility is the part of a claim the patient owes rather than the plan — made up of the deductible, copay, and coinsurance, plus any non-covered charges. It is calculated from the allowed amount after the plan applies its benefits.
The remittance separates patient responsibility from contractual adjustments and plan payment, so the correct balance can be billed to the patient.
Why it matters for billing
Patient responsibility is a large and growing share of revenue, and it is the hardest to collect after the visit. Estimating it up front, collecting copays and known balances at the point of service, and billing accurately afterward all protect this revenue.
