Definition

Provider enrollment is the process of registering a provider or practice with a payer so it can submit claims and be reimbursed, including being linked to the right group and locations. It is closely tied to credentialing but focuses on the billing relationship with the payer.

Until enrollment is complete and effective, claims for that provider and payer can be denied or held, sometimes retroactively to an effective date.

Why it matters for billing

Enrollment gaps are pure lost revenue: a provider seeing patients before enrollment is effective may not be payable for that work. Tracking enrollment status and effective dates — and starting early — prevents claims from piling up unbillable.

Provider Enrollment — frequently asked questions

How is enrollment different from credentialing?

Credentialing verifies a provider’s qualifications; enrollment establishes the billing relationship with the payer so claims can be paid.

Why do effective dates matter in enrollment?

Because claims before the effective date may not be payable, so services rendered before enrollment is active can be at risk.
