Definition

Revenue cycle management (RCM) is the end-to-end process of managing a practice’s financial life of a patient encounter — from scheduling and eligibility, through charge capture, coding, claim submission, payment posting, denial management, and patient collections.

Each stage feeds the next: strong front-end work (eligibility, authorization, accurate demographics) prevents most back-end problems (denials, rework, uncollected balances).

Why it matters for billing

RCM is where clinical care becomes collected revenue. Weakness in any single stage — eligibility, coding, or follow-up — shows up downstream as denials and lost cash. Managing the cycle as one connected process is what keeps a practice financially healthy.
